5 Things To Do When You Feel Like Shit

Do you feel like shit today? Well, so do I! And it got me thinking about all the things I do to feel better during my day when I just don’t want to do anything.

The truth is that every day is not going to be full of sunshine and lollipops. But, with an optimistic attitude that says, “This is just one of those bumps in the road and soon I will be back to normal,” you can force yourself to do some things to get through your day and back on track.

1. Write


Writing is therapeutic, for everyone! Therapists use writing therapy to help patients work through anger, depression, and many other negative emotions, so it will definitely have an impact on a shitty day!

Therefore, grab your pen or put your fingers on your keyboard and start writing. If you don’t have a journal, start one today because it allows you to work through issues, reflect on situations that happened, and come to conclusions about how to be happier in your life. No, really it does – try it.

2. Have An Orgasm

You don’t need someone to have sex with to have an orgasm – you CAN have an orgasm by yourself! I don’t know about you, but when I’m feeling shitty, I don’t always feel in the mood to have sex.

An orgasm triggers certain areas of the brain that produce euphoria and pleasure, which is exactly what you need when you feel like crap.

3. Go Have A Nap


Did you just wake up a few hours ago (like me) and you are ready to go back to bed? I hear you, and I am one of those people that value my sleep above all else, so I can’t argue with myself when I hear the bed calling. I know that my body is burning off a lot of energy right now, and it is no surprise that my body is tired.

Sleep refreshes your body and your mind, and if you feel like you just have no energy left, then it is important to catch a nap and re-energize.

If you are not getting enough sleep in your day then think of this: “Making $60,000 more in annual income has less of an effect on your daily happiness than getting one extra hour of sleep a night,” [Source: Barnett] Wow! I’m thinking that sleep is pretty important (but then I already knew that because it makes me feel so darn good.)

4. Go For A Walk

I am often tempted to go to a public place when I feel like shit. I think my mind thinks that I will feel better because I will have removed myself from the environment I’m in (which is very quiet and gives me too much time to think) and puts me into a place where I don’t have to focus on only me. However, I have come to realize that this is the worst idea ever – for me. I always feel worse when I go someone public, because people seem to annoy me more than ever and add to my shitty mood.

So, now I know that it is really just a desire to get out of my environment without having too many people around. A walk is perfect for this because all you have to do is acknowledge other walks and then be on your way. It is amazing how much better your thoughts get on a walk too – why, I’m not sure, but nature has a way of soothing the most troubled soul. Plus, exercise is a way to feel instantly better, and walking requires very little effort when you have very little effort to give.

Note: Sometimes seeing other people is a good thing. For instance, if you have a family member or friend who always cheers you up, then you should visit them as they will take your mind off your own issues. Alternatively, talking to someone who has it worse off than you will also make you see your situation in a new light. But, sometimes quiet time is needed to reflect, re-energize, and regroup.

5. Watch Music Videos

A lot of people will tell you to listen to music, and I agree with that, But, with the help of some added imagery, you can really let go of some emotions and start to feel better. With the help of YouTube, there is no reason you can’t sit back and watch a few videos wherever you are.

There are some videos that make me cry…hardcore, and afterwards I normally feel better. It is like I get to release my negative emotions a bit and, therefore, I don’t have to deal with as much.

These are only a few suggestions. There really is a lot of stuff you can do to switch your mindset and get out of a funk – the point is you have to take action or else your mood will stay the same.
