Meet Marta Who Lives A Location-Independent Lifestyle

I’ve always believed that travelling is the best way to stay in the present moment and feel passionate about life. Experiencing new sights, meeting new people, and having new experiences is one of the best ways to be truly aware of this moment. One woman has made travelling her life.

As part of my new ‘Despite Dream Crushers…’ series, Marta (otherwise known as A Girl Who Travels) has some insight to share on having a dream and making it happen, despite what other people think or say.

Unlike some people, she was not met with manipulative people who try to destroy dreams, but she did experience what a lot of us freelancers experience – worry from the people closest to us when we make a big decision in our life that is unconventional.

Marta’s Dream: Living A Location-Independent Lifestyle Possible

Q. What Dream Of Yours Did Someone Try To Destroy?

I wouldn’t use a word as strong as “destroy” but I did experience a strong opposition from my family when I decided to switch from 9-5 to working freelance to eventually become location independent.

Q. How Did They Try To Destroy It?

Digital nomad is a bit of a buzzword these days as more and more people are becoming familiar with the concept, however, this wasn’t exactly the case 4-5 years ago. Those close to me were obviously concernehd that I was making a mistake and that my career and finance would suffer. Again, I wouldn’t use the word “destroy” – they simply tried talking me out of it. Needles to say, it didn’t work!

Q. Did You Let Them Slow You Down or Stop You, or Did You Keep on Moving?

I kept moving – my dream has always been to have the freedom to travel whenever and wherever I wanted, and going freelance was a huge step towards making that dream possible. Obviously, to many of those who lived their life according to a certain societal “standard” this type of lifestyle seemed unsustainable. I didn’t let that stop me as I knew deep down that I was making the right decision!

Q. Any Advice for People Dealing With Someone Who Is Trying To Destroy Their Dreams?

I feel like the answer is in the question – it’s YOUR dream and hence it’s up to you to make it a reality. Just because others don’t share the same passion or vision as you, doesn’t mean you should let them dictate or influence how to live your life.  You know yourself best and at the end of the day, you are the best judge in terms of what will and what won’t work for you. Trust your gut feeling and don’t be afraid to follow your true passion!
